Thirty-five skulls. One crown of marigolds. A loose grid of gray skulls turns in different directions, with orange-gold flowers crowning the center. This back-print graphic brings a small burst of color to a quiet, sketch-style design.
Inspired by Mexico’s Día de Muertos, the artwork pairs calaveras (skulls) with cempasúchil (marigolds). The celebration honors loved ones who have died, with observances especially associated with November 1 and 2. Its living traditions bring together Indigenous practices and Catholic All Saints’ and All Souls’ days. Customs vary by community; marigold petals often mark a path to the ofrenda, or offering, welcoming the departed home.
